In the stark realities of poverty and vulnerability in Bertrams, Johannesburg, flourishes a haven of hope and support known as the Tshimangadzo Care Centre. More than just a community hub, Tshimangadzo embodies the Venda spirit of its name - "miracles, wonders and surprises". This dedicated NPO stands as a testament to the power of compassion, empowerment, and unwavering dedication to uplifting those in need.
Tshimangadzo's mission is not merely to alleviate suffering, but to ignite a spark of possibility within the Bertrams community. Its unwavering focus rests on four pillars:
Education: Recognizing education as the bedrock of a brighter future, Tshimangadzo strives to bridge the educational gap. This may involve supporting under-resourced schools, offering after-school tutoring programs, or even creating alternative learning spaces for those who have fallen through the cracks of the traditional system.
Youth Development: Tshimangadzo understands that empowering young minds is crucial for societal progress. It fosters the potential of Bertrams' youth through mentorship programs, skills development workshops, and recreational activities. By providing positive role models and a safe space to explore their talents, Tshimangadzo equips young people with the tools and confidence to build brighter futures.
Gender-Based Violence (GBV): Tshimangadzo combats the pervasive issue of GBV through awareness campaigns, survivor support groups, and legal aid assistance. By empowering victims and fostering a culture of zero tolerance, Tshimangadzo seeks to break the cycle of abuse and build a safer future for all members of the Bertrams community.
Feeding Schemes: Hunger is a constant threat in impoverished communities, and Tshimangadzo stands as a lifeline, providing nutritious meals to families struggling with food insecurity. This not only addresses immediate needs but also lays the foundation for better health, education, and overall well-being.
The march wasn't just about raising awareness; it was about reclaiming the streets, painting them with the colours of resilience and solidarity. It was about reminding every resident, and every passerby, that GBV has no place in our communities, not in Bertrams, not anywhere. The echoes of their chants, demanding justice and protection, served as a powerful message to perpetrators: "We see you, and we will not be silenced."
But the impact of the march extends far beyond the immediate moment. It leaves behind a ripple effect, a sense of empowerment that resonates within the community. It encourages survivors to step forward, seek help, and know that they are not alone. It encourages bystanders to become active allies, to break the silence and intervene when they witness injustice.
Tshimangadzo Care Centre's initiative serves as a reminder, not just for Bertrams but for the entire city. It's a call to action, urging all of us to confront the uncomfortable truths about GBV and work together to dismantle its insidious grip on our society. Every community member must support organizations like Tshimangadzo that provide critical care and resources to survivors. As a community we must hold ourselves and each other accountable, creating safe spaces where vulnerability is met with compassion, not judgment.
The march in Bertrams may have ended, but its echoes linger. They remind us that the fight against GBV is an ongoing marathon, not a sprint. It requires constant vigilance, unwavering commitment, and a collective voice that refuses to be drowned out by the darkness. Let us carry the spirit of that march forward, building a Johannesburg, a South Africa, where every street echoes with the safety and dignity that every woman and child deserves.
We would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero for taking time out of his busy schedule to join us on our Empowerment March Against Gender-Based Violence. Your presence and support mean a great deal to us.
We also want to acknowledge and thank all the organizations that participated in the Gender-Based Violence March. Your commitment and dedication are invaluable, and we appreciate the contributions of Women’s Cycle, Lerathong Community Hub, African Beauty Projects, Lifeline, Miss African Beauty Queen, SANCO, JMPD, Jeppe SAPS, CPF, and Crime Intelligence.
Tshimangadzo Care Centre appreciates each and every one of you, and we look forward to another impactful march in 2025!
Christmas can be a time of hardship and loneliness. Poverty casts a long shadow, dimming the festive cheer. But thanks to the Ukukhanya Programme's initiative, these children got a chance to experience the magic of the season firsthand. The care centre was transformed into a wonderland, adorned with twinkling lights and festive decorations.
The Ukukhanya Programme's Christmas function wasn't just about merrymaking; it was about offering these children a sense of normalcy, a chance to feel loved and cared for. It was about reminding them that they are not alone, that there are people who see them, who value them, and who are determined to make their lives a little brighter.
The Ukukhanya Programme's work is particularly commendable in light of the recent surge in living costs and economic hardship in South Africa. Many families are struggling to make ends meet, and the festive season can be an especially difficult time. By providing Christmas cheer to these underprivileged children, the Ukukhanya Programme is offering not just a moment of joy, but also a vital lifeline of support.
Let us all play our part in ensuring that no child is left behind, especially during this challenging time. Let us make sure that every child in Bertrams, and indeed throughout South Africa, has the opportunity to experience the magic of Christmas

2024, Mr. David Motlafi a seasoned life coach and Deputy Chairperson of the TCC Board of Directors, didn't just offer cliches and empty
promises. He
delved into the trenches, equipping these young minds with the tools and
strategies they need to navigate the often treacherous terrain of job hunting
and career building.
Resumes,
Profiles and CV were discussed in depth, interview skills honed, and the fog of
self-doubt lifted, replaced by a newfound confidence. Mr. Motlafi, a maestro of
motivation, didn't simply teach; he inspired. He showed these young people that
their potential is not confined by their circumstances, that their dreams are
not out of reach.
This
workshop wasn't just about landing a job, it was about building a future. Mr.
Motlafi equipped them with the soft skills so often overlooked in traditional
education – communication, teamwork, resilience. He taught them to navigate the
complexities of professional etiquette, to embrace their unique strengths, and
to turn setbacks into stepping stones.
The
impact? Look beyond the resumes and interview tips. See the spark in their
eyes, the newfound swagger in their step. These young people, no longer passive
recipients of circumstance, are now active agents in their own destinies. They
leave the workshop not just with tools, but with a belief in themselves, a
belief that they can conquer the challenges that lie ahead.
Mr. Motlafi's workshop is a testament to the power of community, of mentorship, of investing in our youth. It's a beacon of hope in a world that often forgets its most precious resource – its future. Today, in Bertrams, thanks to David Motlafi, that future looks a little brighter, a little bolder, a little more ready to take on the world.
Tshimangadzo Care Centre isn't just providing shelter
and support; it's equipping young minds with the tools they need to thrive in
the 21st century – a state-of-the-art computer facility courtesy of a powerful
partnership with Microsoft.
Stepping into Tshimangadzo's tech hub is like entering
a portal to a future for these young minds. Gleaming screens line the walls,
humming with the energy of young people eager to learn, code, and create.
This is no ordinary computer lab. Microsoft's
partnership has brought not just the latest technology, but also a
comprehensive curriculum designed to equip these young minds with the skills
they need to excel in the digital age. From coding and web development to
graphic design and digital marketing, the possibilities are endless.
For many of these youths, this is their first exposure
to the vast potential of technology. It's a chance to escape the limitations of
their circumstances and enter a world where imagination takes flight on digital
wings. They're no longer just consumers of technology; they're becoming
creators, innovators, and architects of their own digital destinies.
The impact of this initiative extends far beyond the four walls of the computer lab. It's about empowering these young people with the tools they need to compete in a globalized economy. It's about opening doors to once unimaginable career opportunities. It's about giving them a voice, and a platform to share their ideas and talents with the world.
